So, I was having dinner with Chris Brogan last night...

Oh, did I just name drop? Why yes, I did!

Chris Brogan, the almighty Godfather of social media and thought-leadership, flew into Dallas last night.  He will be speaking later today at the Angelika Theater to the Dallas Chapter of the Social Media Club (sorry folks, its a sold out event).  I went along with Mike Merrill and Cameron Gawley to pick him up at the airport. We joked about being an "entourage", but the fact was, we all wanted our brush with fame - our 5 minutes (hopefully more) with greatness.

Luckily for us, Chris was in a great mood and was game for dinner and drinks (sweet!) so we whisked him off to Victor Tango's on Henderson.  I had my Trust Agents book and my video camera in my bag and I was prepared to make the most of the opportunity.  It didn't take me very long to realize that everything I had read about Chris was true: he's a very humble, down-to-earth guy.  I also realized that this is a guy who gets bombarded every day by people like me who want to video tape and interview his every thought for their little blog. They want to pick his brain for his thoughts on the next big application or trend.

So, I decided to leave my camera in my bag and just hang out with the guy. Here are a few things I learned about Mr. Chris Brogan:

  • He has great manners. He said "Yes, ma'am" and "please" all night. I even asked him if he was raised somewhere in the South because he was so polite.  Let's face it, folks up North are not known for their genteel ways. But, no, he was born and raised in Maine.
  • He has two children:  A 7-year old daughter and a son who will be 4 tomorrow. Happy birthday, Harold!

  • He doesn't have a TV in his house. W-H-A-T? I found this to be crazy, that a man so into technology doesn't have a TV.  He says he's "too busy" to watch.
  • He loves beets.  I know, right?  Beets.  Who loves beets?  Chris Brogan.
  • He carries a small moleskin notebook with him and jots down notes and ideas all the time.  He pulled it out at least twice during the course of the night, scribbling mysterious thoughts that he wouldn't reveal.  He said they "come 3 to a pack so you don't lose all your speeches at one time". Spoken like a man with experience on the subject.

And now you know a few interesting facts about the man.  I'll be shooting (and maybe taping) Chris' talk tonight, so check back for an update on his Dallas visit.  It has something to do with a bicycle...
